Between syringe and scalpel - ways out of obesity / Insights into modern treatment options

21.02.2025 -

To mark ‘World Obesity Day’, Magdeburg University Medicine is organising an information event. A sufferer will share his personal story, while experts will shed light on the risks of obesity as a chronic disease and present current treatment options.

The multidisciplinary team from the University Clinics for General, Visceral, Vascular and Transplant Surgery, led by Clinic Director Prof. Dr Roland S. Croner, Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy with Clinic Director Prof. Dr Florian Junne, and the Clinic for Renal and Hypertensive Diseases, Diabetology and Endocrinology with Clinic Director Prof. Dr Peter R. Mertens, together with the Medical Care Centre in Magdeburg's Altstadtquartier, cordially invite you to attend. Dr Therese Reinstaller, specialist in visceral surgery at the University Clinic for General, Visceral, Vascular and Transplant Surgery Magdeburg, will be the scientific director.

The event is aimed at patients and interested parties as well as general practitioners and internal medicine specialists. Following the presentations, participants will have the opportunity to ask the experts questions. Participation is free of charge and is possible both on site and online via Zoom. The QR code can be found in the flyer.

Morbid obesity leads to numerous secondary diseases and social stigmatisation. The authorisation of the ‘weight loss injection’ raises new questions about obesity therapy: Is it a real opportunity or just a lifestyle trend? What are the risks and limitations? Is surgery still necessary? How do those affected experience their illness and treatment?

The event organised by the University Medical Centre will shed light on these questions - based on a personal patient story and a specialist lecture. The aim is to provide well-founded information and promote dialogue between those affected, doctors and society.

Background information:

A quarter of the German population is affected by morbid obesity - with serious consequences for their health. Obesity significantly increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems, lung disease, stroke and cancer. In view of the existing health policy and social challenges posed by obesity, there is an urgent need for improved medical care for those affected.

University Medicine Magdeburg has specialised in the treatment of obesity since 1997 and offers comprehensive, interdisciplinary care for those affected nationwide.
